Welcoming a New Year, “United as One”
As we begin a new school year, SkillsUSA would like to thank all of our dedicated advisors for helping the national organization reach 293,803 members in 2020-21. While that number reflects an expected pandemic-related drop from our five-year membership average of 394,400, it also, far more importantly, reflects the resilient and inspiring work so many of you accomplished last year. On the national level, SkillsUSA recognized 357 gold, silver, bronze and quality chapters through the Chapter Excellence Program. We also held a Virtual National Leadership and Skills Conference, including a record 107 SkillsUSA Championships competitions. The event drew more than 5,300 virtual attendees, and 3,700 competitors from across the nation took part, with 1,100 earning national medallions. If you haven’t seen our “SkillsUSA National Medalists Say ‘Thank You'” video yet, created by many of those national medalists, please check it out now for a feel-good reminder of the life-changing effect SkillsUSA membership can have on a student. If you haven’t heard, our theme for the new year is “SkillsUSA: United as One.” Working together, united as one, is how we overcame last year’s challenges, and it’s how we’ll make 2021-22 a positive, empowering year for our members!
Update on Medallion Shipments
The shipping of gold, silver and bronze medallions from the 2021 SkillsUSA Championships began shipping the first week of August. If state directors or advisors (depending on the method of delivery selected) have not received their medallions by Aug. 23, please contact the customer care team for assistance and tracking information at 844-875-4557
Support the Trades — and SkillsUSA — in Fashion
SkillsUSA has teamed up with Tractor Supply Company (TSC) and Carhartt for a new “Support the Trades” campaign designed to raise awareness of the skilled trades while helping SkillsUSA close the skilled trades gap. As part of the campaign, Carhartt and TSC have created a new line of “Support the Trades” shirts, and proceeds from every shirt sold will be donated directly to SkillsUSA! Show your pride for the skilled trades you proudly represent every day while supporting SkillsUSA and the “Champions at Work” that keep our nation moving. “Support the Trades” shirts are available exclusively at TSC starting Aug. 23. They can be purchased at a local TSC store or online at the TSC site. Please shop and show your support! Stay connected with SkillsUSA’s social media platforms for more information throughout the campaign!
Membership Registration is Open — Join Early as a Professional
The SkillsUSA registration site is officially open for the new school year! We encourage advisors to join early so they receive all mailings and emails. Professional members receive many benefits when they submit membership with a valid email address: the Framework Integration Toolkit ensures career readiness within your classroom, training program and chapter; the Program of Work Toolkit includes resources to help implement an effective and successful Program of Work; the “Jump into STEM!” curriculum provides an opportunity to engage elementary and middle school students in STEM learning; and the SkillsUSA Technical Standards are the official regulations for the SkillsUSA Championships competitions. National dues for professional members are $20 plus state dues, which vary. View or download this PDF for 2021-22 state dues and deadlines, and you can find our registration site here.
Virtual TECHSPO Videos, Resources and Guides Still Available
During SkillsUSA’s 2021 career and competition events, the virtual TECHSPO featured a dynamic collection of virtual trade show booths filled with videos, resources and guides. This education and early career content will be available to schools across the country until Aug. 31. There are 38 businesses represented. This could be an interesting class project, team project or individual exercise. Visit the exhibition here.
New “Technical Fridays” Industry Expert Workshops Starting in September
Join us for “Technical Fridays,” SkillsUSA’s new initiative for workshops led by industry experts helping teachers develop specific technical skills relevant to their career fields of interest. On Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. ET, we will be focusing on the automotive industry and will be joined by Frank Woodson, training manager from GATES Corporation. Mr. Woodson will focus on the tensioner in the system and how to diagnose and correct issues that occur with it. There will be plenty of opportunities for networking, Q&A and comprehension checks, so you can leave with a new skill and be ready to implement it in your classroom. The registration fee is $10. Register on Absorb here. If you have questions, contact Karolina Belen.
Fall Professional Development Offerings
Are you ready to take your SkillsUSA knowledge to the next level? Our Fall Professional Development offerings are now available to put on your to-do list! There are more than 30 sessions to choose from in September alone. We encourage you to look at the calendar of events now available and register for events for this fall.
